I have recorded drums to superstition using a close miking technique with two overhead microphones, rather than using a Glyn John microphone placement technique as on Seven Nation Army. Somin Griffin-Dave was drummer for the track.
I used an SM57 microphone to close mic the snare and the toms, because the microphones are sturdy dynamic microphones which are useful for mid-range frequencies. Their cardioid polar pattern also means that they will not pick up much sound from other pieces of the drum kit other than the drum they are close miked to, which is useful for avoiding the sound from the different drums leaking into other microphones.
I used two condenser Rode microphones to use for overhead spaced pair positioning to capture the cymbals, positioned to as to avoid phasing, because this would be an issue in the final mix.
