The idea for Sgt. Pepper came to Paul McCartney while on a flight back to the UK from Kenya, after thinking about how freely the Beatles could live and create music out of the public eye. His idea was that if the band used an alter ego, they would not only be able to live more freely, but according to George Martin, also create music that might not be the traditional style of the Beatles, but rather, the style of music that their fictitious band would create instead. This is what would later become Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
